A Surge of Human Compassion

Poetry

I felt a surge of human compassion —
staring into digital windows at a sea of strangers with tears in their eyes.
Out there, beyond the walls of imposed isolation,
I knew there were others feeling this viral sensation.
The light relief of these moments makes everything seem new—
though the air feels heavy with a familiar kind of blue.
The current coursed through my veins like lightening cracking the sky — splitting my nerves, letting my empathy multiply.
In a flash, hope rose and despair tried to settle like dust.
I felt a surge of human compassion —
wondering what it would take to make everything a little better,
imagining what becomes of these generations of us.

With gratitude for the life and times of Goddess Cicely Tyson — and the words ‘a surge of human compassion’ of Thomas Sankara.🙏🏾
