African Andromeda

Poetry

Africa, where the legend begins
with those of ‘sun burnt’ brown skin,
North by North East beyond the Nile,
right there at the worlds edge,
the cradle of love, what a wonderful thing, a spiritual dream
Black gold — honeysuckle sweet,
now wrapped in the night, glancing skywards to understand,
this beauty filled with sincerity, love at its finest
with eyes twinkling at ‘the tracery of stars’
we spy our diamond Princess, a jewel of the sky,
heavenly daughter, Black star Andromeda

Authors note: This poem is an exploration of the racial ambiguity surrounding the legend of Princess Andromeda in Greek mythology. You can read more here.

Disclaimer: ‘the tracery of stars’ is a quote from the book The Souls of Black folk by W. E. B. Dubois
