All I’ve Got
a spec of stardust
unsure of its place
knows it is something from something anyway
I came out of this world — not into it
a sum of all parts of existence
living in a body made of water
like a mermaid without its tail on display
in human form across land and space
breaths leaving a trace that can not be erased or replaced
I look at my reflection in the glass
I bear witness to all the things she has seen
she is the architect of my every wild dream
not invisible at all to me
life washes and watches over me
as ‘the Ocean waves and the Universe peoples’
tell me, does even arrested development — happen at the right speed?
what do I choose to believe?
since before conception, the idea of me endured to thrive
with every word that I write
I create and narrate a life
mine is to reshuffle dealt cards
if and when things fall apart
whether I have a little or a lot
I am the all that I’ve got
that all is more than enough
from beginning to end
like a rock star — harmonising, colliding with the edge of time on beat
giving back pieces of me to the sky daily on repeat
I spend these days and nights alone with me
I am all the love I really need
Authors note: This piece took some inspiration from a song sung by the legendary Whitney Houston (whose birthday it was yesterday, may she continually rest well) — called ‘All the Man That I Need’. I decided to flip the sentiments of these lines in particular ‘He’s all I’ve got in this world…but he’s all the man that I need’ just a little — to reflect the knowledge, power and application of self love. Also, the line ‘the Ocean waves and the Universe peoples’, is an excerpt of a quote/speech by Alan Watts.
