Awhile

Hold back the night,
let me wander through the city and bake in the sun for awhile.
A different season is just a breath away.
And the memory of getting wasted
and wasting time falling in love with the wrong one again
and these too hot and too sticky summer moments will — slowly —
begin to fade.
In awhile,
the streetlights will return to light the dusky, late afternoons.
And once again it will feel so cold outside that the air will bite my skin
and I’ll be trading these sweats for shivers.
In awhile,
I’ll feel sun-kissed enough for the night to fall,
ready to stop pushing away —
and start pulling my deferred dreams closer and closer
until they wrap themselves around me.
In awhile,
I will wake up with a fistful of stardust and ancestral secrets
that I’ll keep between us.
And for awhile,
I’ll remember how to use these as antidotes to the fear of falling and flying.
