Ergh…personally, I think you’re putting being British on a rose tinted perch. It ain’t really all that tbh, we have very British problems round here…lmao. When I visited NY a few years ago, I had the pleasure of being stopped by the infamous NYPD. My sister and I inadvertently, went through the turnstyles in the subway at the same time…enter undercover NYPD. Because they were in plain clothes, we ignored their approach and statement of ‘ police, please stop’…and kept walking. Anyway, they swiftly stopped in our pathway and flashed their badges…we stopped in disbelief…’ Oh, sorry we didn’t realise you were ACTUALLY police officers…we thought you were taking the piss or something.’ Basically on hearing our accents, their whole stance changed…hostilities ended…I suppose accent privilege kicked in …and they were like ‘welcome to NY, how are you doing today…and one of them tried to ask my sister for a date later…she declined. So, there’s that I guess. Thanks for sharing
