For the Culture/For Life
I fall deeper in love with our brown skin,
I speak truth to power the Goddess within.
I fall deeper into our pools of light,
our fields of Black tulips,
libraries of literature,
our Hip Hop prose,
our diverse cultural vibes,
the red, Black, green, Black star line.
We are a lyric, a rhythm transcending time.
Still, I remain weary about our vulnerable place in this world.
Still, I remain certain of claiming our space in this world.
I have a voice as sweet as Black molasses —
even when it shakes,
it’s grand rising in harmony with the breaths in my chest.
Every syllable coated in the melodies of the caged birds songs —
breathtaking notes of resistance and redemption songs,
shattering glass ceilings that put limits on where we belong.
I am a woman,
enemy of the patriarchy,
sister soldier fighting for the survival of love.
A glorious reflection of this whole Universe.
The Sun, the Moon and the stars know their worth
and we should know — we are God’s on this Earth.
I wonder at us as I wonder at beyond the above.
You are my comrades,
my soul sisters,
other brothers.
I am your forever friend,
from the beginning right through to every bittersweet end.
