Falling in love seems so easy.
Falling out of love feels so hard.
Why must we fall at all?
Even in this space and time between us,
you still drag tears from my eyes —
as if you are the moon and I am the ocean tides.
Even in this space and time between us,
somehow we’re still too close —
as if we were us just yesterday.
You are nowhere to be seen,
but everywhere in between — like a haunting.
I feel you wrapping yourself around me,
pulling me in like gravity.
My fingernails try to plant themselves on the edge of this cliff,
but before long,
I fall back like a heavy weight into nothingness.
When I close my eyes and dream,
I have no curves or edges.
I am helium—
always and only helium.
