Member-only story
the scent of the one with ‘eyes that commit’
fragrances the air and my lungs with bliss
an aphrodisiac
I feel powerless to resist
I’m lost in a daydream
imagining the taste of your lips
until, suddenly I’m triggered to begin holding my breath
reminiscing about the last time my senses were undressed
when once upon a time,
I felt this much — this fast
only in the end — to come completely apart
will I ever exhale and outrun the hold of your stare …
it’s too late
you step closer
now your careless breaths against my ear
you fully intend to let me fall into these stories of us
we’ll meet in the midst of our first misadventure
the wild wind sets the scene, I forget everything
your lingering scent — slowly poisons my blood
Authors note: the line ‘eyes that commit’ is an excerpt from a piece by Nayyirah Waheed from her outstanding book Salt.
