The Human Heart Beats On

A poem

The human heart beats on like a drum playing to life’s rhythm.

When disappointments come thick and fast
and you’re the chosen one but chosen last.
You might be falling in love for the first time with your heart whole
or trying again with it scratched and broken—
on the edge of glory or seconds from falling apart.
You might be under the influence of pure enjoyment
as you fly paper planes from balconies like a grown up kid
in the company of your carefree kids,
or indulging in bad habits all night
as you dance the woes of adulthood away and breathe in delight —
filling you up with the gift of memorable prose and poetry
having just lived through the hardest season you’ve ever known.
This season may feel softer or harder still,
with the fires that burn everywhere
and the bridges that are crumbling beneath your feet
and the traces of ash that you’re breathing in.
You may find yourself falling again,
poetic and tragic as a leaf suddenly disconnected from its tree —
scrambling to rebuild your world piece by piece —
before hitting the ground.
In the darkness as the stars seem further away
and all the lights fade from your eyes
and everything is shadows
and you have nothing left to give yourself or the world,
the human heart beats on as you keep stitching yourself together with mercy and whispered prayers that fly higher than the sky,
as high as you do in every dream.

The human heart beats on until your lungs lose the battle
and your breath becomes air
and you become the wind defying gravity.
